AERIAL WORK PLATFORM APPLICATIONS

Slewing Bearings for Aerial Work Platforms: Small Rings, Zero-Defect Stakes

Compact slewing bearings for boom lifts, truck-mounted platforms and MEWPs where people-carrying safety, platform sway, light-weight design and repeatable batch quality are central.

An aerial work platform carries people. The slewing ring may be smaller than a crane bearing, but its clearance, gear backlash, dimensional consistency and traceability directly influence machine feel, platform stability and the technical file of a safety-relevant product.

The load case: modest values, strict consequences

A boom lift may carry a relatively small basket load, but the full-outreach condition creates the governing tilting moment and the machine standard adds wind, travel and dynamic considerations. The bearing review must use the OEM load combinations and factors rather than a generic catalogue assumption.

Compact single-row four-point contact ball structures are common. Larger machines may use 011/012 or 013/014 standard series; weight-sensitive platforms can begin with the 06 light series, while the 23 flange series can simplify fabricated turntable interfaces.

Full-outreach review

Moment rises rapidly with boom extension even when basket load changes little, so maximum outreach deserves explicit checking.

Lightweight interface

Reduced ring sections and fabricated flanges save mass only when the surrounding support remains stiff enough for uniform raceway loading.

02

Backlash is also a ride-quality specification

Raceway clearance and gear backlash can amplify through a long boom into platform movement. Neither value can be reduced to zero, but both need a controlled band and repeatable measurement. OEM control tuning and operator confidence depend on machines within the same production batch behaving consistently.

Specify the clearance acceptance range, measurement condition, gear accuracy and backlash method in the drawing or inspection plan. Where operating cycles justify it, hardened gearing can slow backlash growth and preserve machine feel.

Measure and record

Use the same loading, angular position, fixture and instrument method for production acceptance and service trending. A number without a repeatable method is not a useful trend.

03

Volume production makes consistency the specification

Platform OEMs may purchase in repeated batches. That shifts attention from one successful prototype to process capability across production: stable mounting dimensions, repeatable clearance, controlled hardness and case depth, serial traceability, consistent packing and formal change control.

MERYDOM publishes its supplier qualification information, inspection capability and traceability system so OEM quality teams can review these controls before sample approval.

Batch packaging and labelling of aerial work platform slewing rings
  • Batch measurementDefine the inspection frequency and records for mounting interfaces, clearance, runout and rotation behaviour.
  • Identity and packingUse serial or batch marking and packaging that supports incoming inspection and line-side handling.
  • Change controlMaterial, process and sub-supplier changes should not reach serial supply without the agreed notification and approval route.

Safety documentation for a people-carrying machine

EN 280 and ANSI A92 are machine-level contexts for aerial platforms. The slewing bearing documentation supports the technical file through agreed material certificates, dimensional and clearance reports, hardness records, traceability and specified crack-testing results. The bearing is supplied to the OEM purchase specification and does not independently certify the complete machine.

Fleet maintenance can trend tilt clearance, drive current or hydraulic pressure, grease condition, noise and seal condition. Replacement identification uses the marking, interface dimensions and gear data; photographs and a dimensioned sketch can be submitted through the RFQ channel.

FAQ

Aerial Work Platforms slewing bearing FAQ

Which slewing bearing fits a boom lift?

Compact single-row four-point contact ball structures are common. The 06 light series suits weight-sensitive machines, the 23 flange series supports simplified fabricated interfaces, and larger platforms may use standard 011–014 structures. Final selection is based on the full-outreach load case and machine requirements.

Why does clearance matter so much on aerial platforms?

Raceway clearance and gear backlash can amplify through a long boom into visible or perceptible platform movement. OEMs normally need a controlled acceptance band and repeatable measurement records rather than only a broad maximum value.

What is the 06 light series?

It is a reduced-cross-section single-row ball bearing family intended for moderate loads where mass, envelope and cost are important. It is commonly considered for aerial platforms and other compact rotating equipment.

What is a flanged slewing bearing?

A flanged ring incorporates mounting flanges that can simplify attachment to fabricated structures and reduce separate machined interface parts. The complete support stiffness and bolt joint still require engineering review.

What documentation should MEWP bearings carry?

The agreed package commonly includes material certificates, dimensional and clearance records, hardness or case-depth results, traceability and specified crack-testing records. Requirements should be fixed in the purchase specification and machine technical-file plan.
